Well this is my second post, and I would like to thank Derrick for his comment on my first post.
I have to agree with Derrick when it comes to children persisting in their studies. Children learn from everything in their world, and that includes both good and bad.
A child that is enrolled in a subject no matter what it is and is allowed to "drop out" whenever they like learn that quitting is easier than sticking with something. As we all know the only way to be successful is by completing what we start.
As with any subject or in this case anything you learn in life you always start with the basics and sometimes the basics can be boring but they are necessary.
A good example is someone that wants to become a Doctor.First they need to have good marks in middle school, then fight to get into a good university. Then they must graduate university with good marks in order to be accepted to a good medical school. Again they need to obtain good marks to qualify for an internship at a hospital where they will work endless hours for the next several years before they can finally become a Doctor.
Now I know you are saying to yourselves, "I already knew that" and "How does that apply to English?". Learning English starts with learning many different rules, sounds, tongue movements, tones, etc etc etc................but for those that want to speak English it's part of what is necessary. From the time a child decides he/she wants to become a Doctor till the time they are actually a Doctor takes many years of hard work and study, and that is the exact same as learning English.
There is a good children's story called "The little engine that could" and the moral of the story is never give up, don't quit.
A last word. Parents, a very good way to help your child to speak English is to encourage them to use what they know, no matter how much or how little as often as possible. Use English in the home daily, use it at restaurants, use it when shopping, use it anywhere and any place you are with your child.
Finally, don't worry about perfect pronunciation or grammatical errors until they are older and have developed their confidence, just be happy they are speaking and you are encouraging them to.
I thank you again for reading my weekly blog, and I look forward to questions or comments.
Mike.
